16th KUNSTSTOFF-DIA(hr)LOG®

On May 20 and 21, 2025, the 16th Kunststoff-DIA(hr)LOG® of AKRO-PLASTIC GmbH took place in Niederzissen. This year's two-day event was held under the motto “Innovate or Evaporate – From Ideal to Solution: Practical Sustainability.” and once again offered a platform for professional exchange on current challenges, technical developments and market-relevant issues in the plastics industry.

May 20 and 21

Around 120 participants from industry, research and business accepted the invitation to find out about and exchange ideas on new impulses in the field of sustainable plastics solutions in presentations, discussions and practical demonstrations.

Dr. Oliver Neuß, Managing Director of AKRO-PLASTIC GmbH, began by giving an overview of the current business situation and the development of the group of companies. He explained important market changes, strategic priorities and investments at the Niederzissen site. It became clear that the company is continuing to position itself for the future despite volatile conditions - with a clear focus on innovative materials, global market presence and sustainable production processes.

16th KUNSTSTOFF-DIA(hr)LOG: 20 May 2025

Day 1

Dr. Thieß Petersen, Senior Advisor at the Bertelsmann Stiftung, analyzed the current economic policy situation from a macroeconomic perspective. His presentation highlighted the growing challenges for industrial locations in Europe - particularly in the area of conflict between climate policy, digitalization, innovation pressure and geopolitical uncertainties. He explained how important long-term location factors - such as education, infrastructure and technological openness - are for the competitiveness of German SMEs.

In his lecture, Frank Schockemoehle presented the so-called TSG process (Thermo-Special-Granulation), with which recyclates can be processed in a process-stable and low-emission manner. It became clear that it is not just about the use of recycled materials, but about holistic optimization along the entire process chain. The Pöppelmann Group uses the process in various product areas and has been able to significantly reduce its carbon footprint while maintaining high component quality.

Dr. Michael Rieck from AKRO-PLASTIC GmbH presented how additive manufacturing and compounding can be more closely interlinked in the future. In particular, he focused on the use of 3D printing processes for the early validation of new material formulations. In combination with adapted plastic compounds, this opens up new possibilities for individualized products, faster development cycles and a more efficient market launch - especially for small series or functionally integrated components.

At the end of the first day, participants were able to see what modern compounding technology looks like today in a live demonstration at the AKRO-PLASTIC Competence Center. Process examples from ongoing production, current applications and technical solutions were shown, for example in the areas of material development, dosing technology and process optimization. The practical demonstration has been an integral part of DIA(hr)LOG® for years and underlines the claim of consistently linking theory and application.

Day 2

Quentin de Carvalho from Wood MacKenzie Chemicals opened the second day of the event with a strategic outlook on the global polymer markets. In his presentation, he outlined current developments in the petrochemical industry, for example with regard to the availability of raw materials, price fluctuations and regulatory trends. Particular focus was placed on the role of alternative carbon sources and the increasing demand for bio-based or recycled materials - especially in the automotive and packaging sectors.

Alexander Heitbrink presented a new technology for metal-plastic bonding based on polyketone compounds. The so-called MPDB technology (Multi Point Direct Bonding) enables a reliable bond between metal and plastic components, especially in applications subject to high thermal loads. The presentation showed how the Erwin Quarder Group can use this to realize new functional integration in complex assemblies - e.g. in thermal management systems.

Joachim Friedrich from K.D. Feddersen Holding GmbH then presented an AI-supported early warning system for detecting faulty batches. The aim is to use sensors and smart algorithms to detect anomalies in real time during production and thus reduce rejects. Practical examples were used to show how artificial intelligence can proactively support quality assurance - an important step towards more efficient and stable processes.

In his presentation, Dr. Niels Koch explored the question of how plastics are positioned in the public perception - between “climate killer” and “problem solver”. He showed how OEMs such as Audi AG are seeking dialog with stakeholders in order to objectively classify the role of plastics in sustainable mobility. The presentation called for more transparency in communication and a fact-based discussion of material decisions - along the entire value chain.

The event concluded with a tour of the AKRO-PLASTIC production facilities in Niederzissen. Here, the participants were able to gain an impression of the modern compounding technology and the resource efficiency measures in place.

Farewell to Leander Bergmann

Leander Bergmann was bid farewell at this year's DIA(hr)LOG. He first developed the idea for the Plastics DIA(hr)LOG® in 2006, designed the concept and accompanied the event as moderator for more than almost two decades. Under his leadership, the DIA(hr)LOG® developed into a respected specialist event with a high level of technical depth and a clear focus on knowledge transfer within the industry.

AKRO-PLASTIC GmbH would like to thank Leander Bergmann most sincerely for his many years of commitment, his expertise and his decisive contribution to shaping the format since the first event.
