Fakuma 2017

The Feddersen Group at Fakuma 2017

The Aesthetics of Lightweight Design

In the last 36 years, Fakuma has opened its doors 25 times to plastics professionals, evolving from a small regional trade fair to one of the most important exhibitions of industrial plastics processing in Europe. The Feddersen Group has been a part of this evolution since the early stages.

At a shared exhibition stand covering a floor space of 150 square metres, the Hamburg-based plastics distributor K.D. Feddersen, its sister company AKRO-PLASTIC (a compounder based in Niederzissen/Germany) and its branches AF-COLOR and BIO-FED demonstrated a host of interesting materials highlighting “The aesthetics of lightweight design”. Various components displayed on a presentation table gave visitors the opportunity to experience these materials with all their senses. Every one of these components was provided by customers.

“Surface appearance and weight savings can be presented much more easily with components than with sample sheets or tension rods” remarked Thilo Stier, Sales Director / Innovation Manager at the compounder AKRO-PLASTIC GmbH. But the components could not only be touched but also “sat on” – in the form of an original Franz Kiel bus seat bench, integrated into a seating group and featuring a seat bucket made from an AKROMID® B28 GF25 9.

“In addition to the materials from our sister company AKRO-PLASTIC, our distribution portfolio features engineering compounds from Celanese and LyondellBasell, two strategic partners with whom we are able to cover a broad range of applications”, said Wolfgang Wieth, Director of Business Development at K.D. Feddersen GmbH & Co. KG. “By using our plastics compounds, we can eliminate numerous process steps, such as component painting or lamination with textile or PVC skins”, explained Wieth, referencing a textile-look pillar trim panel made of Softell by LyondellBasell featured on the presentation table.

A distributor’s business model has changed tremendously in the last 10 years, Wieth explained. Today, alongside with goods distribution, application support services are paramount, ranging from selecting a suitable material to optimal processing of the same. In Germany alone, K.D. Feddersen employs 8 application engineers who provide regional support to local customers from their home office base.

At this year’s Fakuma, alongside the tried-and-tested product line of polyamide compounds, AKRO-PLASTIC showcased its new developments, PBT and PET compounds and polyester blends, which are marketed under the name PRECITE®. Flame-retardant compounds based on halogen-free flame retardant were also presented.

On the evening of 18 October, the fifth Orange Blue Nite took place in the hangar at the Dornier Museum in Friedrichshafen. The joint event, to which customers of every company in the Feddersen Group are invited, has been extremely popular for many years. With over 250 participants, this year’s function marked a new attendance record. “Our event gives our customers the opportunity to have stimulating discussions in a pleasant atmosphere over a good meal”, said Dr. Stephan Schnell, Managing Director of K.D. Feddersen GmbH & Co. KG.
