New Polyester Compounds for Precise Applications

For the last 30 years, AKRO-PLASTIC has been a developer and manufacturer of high-quality engineering compounds specialised in the field of polyamides. However, AKRO-PLASTIC has also manufactured a significant amount of polyesters for multiple partners. The compounding lines of FEDDEM, the sister company of AKRO-PLASTIC, are specially designed and optimised to compound polyesters gently and to maintain as much ductility as possible.

AKRO-PLASTIC is excited to launch its new PRECITE® product line for thermoplastic polyester compounds, based on PBT, PET and different blends. PBT compounds are used in applications that require high precision, tight tolerances, good mechanical properties as well as superior heat aging performance. Through the low moisture absorption, Polyester compounds have an exceptional dimensional stability, making them the first choice for precision parts majorly in the automotive, industrial, appliances and E/E industry.

The extraordinary high repeatability and accuracy of AKRO-PLASTIC’s global ICX® Technology is the perfect match for high precision PBT applications. 

The PRECITE® portfolio focuses on glass fibre reinforced PBT and PET up to 50 %. Additionally, low warpage blends like PBT/ASA are available, as well as blends with improved surface quality based on PBT/PC or PBT/PET. We also offer PRECITE® with our unique affordable carbon fibre reinforcement, ICF. Moreover our portfolio offers compounds which are hydrolysis stabilized and also compounds with food contact approval.

Product Characterisation

PRECITE® thermoplastic polyesters are based on polybutylene- or polyethylene-terephthalate – (PBT or PET) – and have a unique combination of properties to cover the high requirements of a variety of complex applications. PRECITE® features a very high stiffness and strength as well as low moisture absorption leading to an exceptional dimensional stability. Furthermore PRECITE® has an outstanding heat aging performance as well as excellent gliding properties and wear resistance.

Carbon fibre reinforcement

ICF

Next to our AKROMID® grade line we also offer the affordable carbon fibre reinforcement ICF that harmonises extremely well with PRECITE® and offers lighter weight solutions especially for the automotive market. PRECITE® P3 ICF 20 has similar properties to a PBT GF 30, offering 10 % reduction of density. PRECITE® ICF 30 can replace a PBT GF 50 and save part weight up to 18 %.

PRECITE® PBT

Applications

PRECITE® has a unique combination of properties to accomplish the high requirements of a variety of complex applications. The most important markets for PRECITE® are the automotive and E/E industry as well as appliances. Generally, PBT is the material of choice for applications with high demands for dimensional stability, strength and rigidity as well as heat aging performance.

Especially in automotive, the dimensional stability, the resistance against fuels and lubricants as well as the good long-term thermal behavior enable PRECITE® to be the first choice for many components in the electric segment. Typical applications are fuse boxes, door locking modules as well as housings for electric motors for wipers, window lift or seat adjustment. Also small components like connectors and switches with tight tolerances require the precision of PBT compounds. 
 

In opposite to nylons the high stiffness of PRECITE® is independent from moisture. Along with the weather resistance, PRECITE® can be also used for exterior applications like wiper arms, mirror housings as well as elements of sunroofs. 

Furthermore, the color stability, also at elevated temperatures, enables visible applications in the E/E and appliance sector, like oven handles, knobs or switches as well as light bulb housings.
