Innovative and sustainable alternatives for conventional polyamides
Recyclates offer great advantages from a sustainability point of view. Reuse reduces waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Shorter process chains and greater efficiency lead to lower consumption of energy and row materials. In LCA, recyclates are usually considered using the cut-off allocation method. This approach is based on the philosophy that the primary (first) production of materials is always attributed to the primary user of a material. When a material is recycled, the primary producer does not receive credit for providing recyclable materials. As a result, recyclable materials are available to the recycling processes unencumbered, and secondary (recycled) materials bear only the effects of the recycling processes. This results in a very favorable carbon footprint.
With the ECO product line, AKRO-PLASTIC offers a range of high-quality mechanical recyclates. In mechanical recycling, a distinction is made between post-industrial (PIR) and post-consumer recycling (PCR), depending on the raw material source. The AKROMID® ECO portfolio includes polyamide 6 and polyamide 66 compounds from PIR sources, while PRECITE® ECO are polyester compounds from PCR sources.

In the field of PA6, AKROMID® B3 GF 30 ECO black (7923) offers an alternative to our standard product AKROMID® B3 GF 30 black (2485) with at least 30% PIR content. This recycled content meets the common requirements of many OEMs and allows to produce a compound, which shows a constant quality level. The proportion of virgin material can compensate for the naturally always somewhat fluctuating quality of the recyclate. In comparison between the two types mentioned above, the mechanical properties drop by 10-15%, but the CO2 footprint drops by a full 30%. The loss of stiffness and strength can be compensated by adding additional 5% virgin glass fiber, which we have realized with AKROMID® B3 GF 35 ECO black (8472).
